NAFDAC not to reverse ban on Potassium Bromate


The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control in its struggle to rid the country of fake products has said that it will not reverse its ban on the use of potassium bromate in the baking of bread across the country.






The Director-General of NAFDAC, Dr. Paul Orhii, who warned barkers to prohibit in the use of potassium bromate to produce bread made this remark at the flag-off of the annual bread-monitoring programme in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, expressed the need for bakery owners to adhere strictly to standards put in place by NAFDAC.
Orhii, who was represented by the South-South Zonal Coordinator, Benson Kine, reminded the bakers that potassium bromate has been prohibited in Nigeria since 1993 and enjoined them to continue in order to save the live of Nigerians.
“The use of potassium bromate in flour milling and bread baking was banned in Nigeria since 1993 and NAFDAC in her unflinching determination to enforce the ban has prescribed stiffer penalties, including prosecution of defaulters to serve as deterrent.
“In addition, continuous collaboration, dialogue and consultation with the stakeholders, Association of Master Bakers, Flower Millers etc., are part of strategies to enforce the ban.
In conclusion he appealed to all bakers to endeavor to always be in attendance of the bread-monitoring programme organized yearly by the agency.
